Yarrow Sachets for Liver Compresses:

A homemade yarrow pouch is a time-tested home remedy from traditional folk medicine designed to support the liver and gallbladder during your fasting or detox regimen. It helps activate the body’s internal cleansing process, as yarrow (Achillea millefolium) contains bitter compounds and essential oils that have antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory effects and promote bile flow.

What are the benefits of a liver compress?

The liver is our most important detoxification organ; it performs at peak capacity every day and deserves our special care. It has a major influence on our body’s energy balance. If the organ is constantly overloaded, you’ll feel perpetually tired, irritable, and overwhelmed.

In addition to taking a variety of internal detox remedies, you can gently support your liver—and, of course, your intestines, since the liver wrap has a soothing effect on your entire abdominal area.

A liver wrap is applied externally and supports the functions of the liver and gallbladder in their detoxification and digestive processes.

It boosts your overall metabolism and improves digestion, and it helps prevent intestinal cramps. The moist heat dilates the blood vessels and facilitates the flow of bile from the liver’s bile ducts. For those who have trouble falling asleep or generally don’t sleep well, the liver wrap helps you fall asleep quickly and enjoy a deeper sleep.

Being wrapped up feels good—you feel cared for, cozy, and secure. The moist heat improves blood circulation to the liver; of course, this could also be achieved with a warm, damp cloth, but yarrow adds its healing properties to the mix. Feel free to drink some yarrow tea beforehand as well.

Instructions for sewing a yarrow sachet:

It’s best to use only natural fabrics (e.g., organic cotton or linen). This allows the active ingredients to penetrate particularly well.

Materials and supplies:

- A piece of fabric, depending on the desired size, at least 20x30 cm; it should cover your right rib cage well. Since yarrow can stain, feel free to use an older piece of fabric or a worn-out T-shirt.

- Cotton thread

- 35–45 g of yarrow (harvested and dried yourself, or from a health food store or pharmacy)

- Sewing machine

Let’s get started:

Cutting:

Cut the fabric to the desired size.

Sewing:

Place the fabric right sides together and sew along 3 sides.

Turning & Filling:

Turn the pouch inside out so that the seams are on the inside, and fill it with the dried and finely chopped yarrow. The pouch should be loosely filled, not stuffed.

Closing:

Fold the open edge inward and sew the pouch completely closed.

Practical Application: Liver Compress:

For the wrap, you’ll also need:

- 1 bath towel or wool scarf
- 1 guest towel to wrap around yourself
- a hot water bottle and hot water

Practical Tips:

To prepare, lay out all the items in advance so that you can then simply lie down comfortably with the wrap and relax.

1. Place a large towel or wool blanket on the bed—you’ll lie down on it afterward—with the guest towel and hot water bottle within easy reach beside it.

2. Dip the yarrow sachet in hot water—Caution! Risk of burns!—let it steep briefly, then squeeze it out and place it directly on your liver (upper right abdomen, right on the lower rib cage).

3. Wrapping: Lie down on the prepared towel or scarf, place the guest towel over it, and wrap yourself in the bath towel; then place the hot water bottle on top—this will retain the heat for at least 30 minutes—and cover yourself comfortably.

Important:

It’s best to avoid distractions like reading, your cell phone, music, or anything else. Give your body your full attention, relax, and breathe deeply in and out.

The best time for the liver wrap:

Ideally, this should be done during the midday rest period between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., but not after heavy meals. Of course, you can also do the wrap in the evening or, if you’re feeling brave, right during the liver’s active time at night—between 1:00 and 3:00 a.m.—according to the body’s internal clock.

How often the liver wrap should be used:

As a supportive measure, the liver wrap should be used at least 3 times a week during fasting or detox periods; during a strict fasting week, the liver wrap can be used daily.

Important Notes: When You Should Not Use the Compress:

In cases of acute abdominal pain or inflammation, gastrointestinal ulcers, fever, or a known allergy to the Asteraceae family, to which yarrow belongs. Likewise, if you are pregnant, you should consult your doctor beforehand.
