General information about cistus:
Cistus incanus, also known as gray-haired rockrose, is a shrub with fragrant pink flowers that grows to about 1m in height. The cistus shrub is mainly native to the Mediterranean area where it is known to have been used since around 400 BC. In those times mostly the myrrh, or cistus resin, was exported to the Sudan and to Egypt where it was prized as a remedy against bacteria and fungi. Modern Greeks still recount the legend of how the cistus plant is said to have acquired its beneficial properties. According to Greek mythology, the gods intended the plant to be used for healing warriors’ wounds, whereas the goddesses felt that a plant of such beauty should serve to beautify mankind, so the cistus plant was endowed with both properties. Nowadays cistus is also highly valued in the rest of Europe, mainly due to its high polyphenol content.
