Blueberries belong to the heather family and grow on dwarf shrubs. The shrub grows predominantly on marshy or on nutrient-poor soils. It is pervasive in both Europe and Asia where it grows on flat lowlands as well as in the mountains. Deciduous and coniferous forests also provide an ideal habitat for blueberry bushes. In spring, the blueberry shrub develops oblong, green to reddish coloured flowers that grow to be about 5 mm in length. Between July and September the shrub first develops blackish-blue berries that grow to be about 1 cm in size before turning blueish-gray as they ripen. Blueberries are the most popular berry in Germany and can be eaten either fresh or dried, or made into juice. They can also be made into jam, served with ice cream, or mixed into yogurt. Blueberries have a very characteristic dark blue colour and aromatic taste.
Recommended daily intake:
