Mangosteen is the fruit of a tropical tree belonging to the genus “Garcinia”. The Mangosteen tree is very sensitive to cold temperatures which is why it can only grow in warm climates. The word "mangosteen" stems from the Malay language and the mangosteen tree is indigenous to the Malay Peninsula, but today it is grown in many tropical regions. It takes seven years before one can expect to harvest a mangosteen, but the best crops are obtained after around 10 years of growth at which point a tree can yield between 500 and 5000 fruits. The mangosteen tree blossoms between September and October, and the fruit itself ripens in November and December. A ripe mangosteen is roughly the size of a tomato (around 2.5 to 7.5 cm), and has a purple leathery skin that is often covered in yellowish spots. Mangosteen have a white pulp with a sour taste that is somehow reminiscent of grapes, peaches, pineapple, and grapefruit The purple skin of the mangosteen is also processed into things such as tea.
