General information about maca:
The maca root has been grown for approximately 2000 years in the high altitudes of the Peruvian Andes, between 3800m and 5000m. Given the extreme climatic conditions (temperature fluctuations,high winds, strong UV radiation), the maca plant is very robust. In Peru, maca is valued as an important food because it is rich in protein, minerals, and vitamins. The Incas held the maca root in high esteem and used it as a valuable energy source for their warriors. It was also believed to be an aphrodisiac and was used at weddings to enhance the newlyweds’ fertitlity. In Shanghai, researchers recently discovered two unknown components of the maca root named macaid and macaen, which are likely unique to the maca plant.
