Yellow ginger, saffron root or, as is generally known, turmeric is one of the ginger plants and, just like ginger and ginseng, comes from Asia. Turmeric has been used for thousands of years in Asian and Indian Ayurveda, often in combination with psyllium husks. Here the spice is mainly used in dried form; in Thailand, however, the freshly grated tuber is mainly used to refine dishes. Thus turmeric is a true all-rounder.
The fresh yellow ginger has a slightly pungent flavour, while the powder has a mildly spicy taste when dried. Its yellow dye curcumin (or curcumin) has a strong colouring power and is a cheaper alternative to yellow saffron. Besides its use as an additive in food, curcumin is also used in cosmetics.
As the essential oils evaporate quickly, turmeric should be stored in a dry and dark place. Turmeric powder is ideal for seasoning many dishes, but also for colouring food. In large quantities it develops a pungent taste, in small doses turmeric adds a mild spice to your dish. Turmeric can also be taken as tea.
