The acerola cherry is a drupe (meaning a fruit enclosing a stone) that grows mainly wild in the dry forests of Central and South America. Its colour ranges between yellow-orange and dark red. The acerola cherry has the highest vitamin C content of any known fruit, and is also rich in various B vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. The sensitive nature of the acerola cherry makes it unsuitable for transportation which is why, for commercial purposes, it is almost always either dried and pulverized, or made into juice in the trade in Europe
